Team defeats Kenosha & Addison but falls to Lombard
GREEN BAY, WI – The Dodgers competed in the Wisconsin State League Challenge in Sheboygan over the weekend, and the team fared well, winning their first two games against Kenosha and Addison before dropping their finale against Lombard on Sunday afternoon.
Things got off to a rocky start on Saturday evening, when Kenosha plated three runs in the bottom of the first, but the Dodgers answered right back with four runs in the top of the second.
After Matt Bald and Mike Manns collected back-to-back singles to open the inning, Kyle Kosobucki followed with a line drive to left that scored Bald and put the Dodgers on the board. An infield single by Jacob Lacy drove in Manns, and a base hit from Jake Fietz scored Kosobucki to tie the game at 3-3 before Noah Robinson lofted a fly ball to right, allowing Lacy to score on the sac fly to put the Dodgers on top 4-3.
Staked to a lead, starting pitcher Matt Willems settled down and proceeded to go six innings, keeping the Kings off the scoreboard the rest of the way, as he picked up his fifth win of the season.
The Dodgers added an insurance run when Lacy’s second hit of the game drove in Manns to make the score 5-3, and Evan Rice came on to work a scoreless seventh to close out the ballgame and record the save.
The Dodgers second game of the weekend saw them taking on the Addison Braves on Sunday, and they jumped out to an early lead when Jacob Lacy scored following a McNabb single in the second inning.
They added two more in the third, but the Braves answered back with two runs of their own in the fourth and another in the fifth to tie the game.
The score stayed that way into extra innings, when Bald scored on a single to center off the bat of Manns. After moving to third on a base hit by Kosobucki, Manns came in to score on a wild pitch to make the score 5-3.
Starting pitcher Matt Freeman closed the door from there, as he went the distance, striking out four over eight innings to pick up the win.
The weekend wrapped up with a game against the Lombard Orioles on Sunday afternoon, with the Orioles defeating the Dodgers by a score of 11-2.
Lombard scored single runs in each of the first, second and third innings, then piled on two in the fifth, four in the sixth and two more in the seventh as they cruised to victory over the Dodgers.
Noah Robinson started game three on the mound and went five innings while also picking up a base hit from the leadoff spot. Lacy doubled and stole a base, and Bald added a single for the only other Dodgers hit of the game.
